Val di Chiana

History and stunning scenery - discovering the Val di Chiana valley

This area was already important during the Etruscan period, when it represented the trait d’union between the Arno and Tiber valleys.

But under the Roman empire the exceptional water flow of the ancient Clanis river was blocked, causing water stagnation in the Chiana area.

This region was unsuitable for several centuries during the Middle Ages and its population gradually moved away. Finally, the recovery carried out by Fossombroni (in the late 1700s, on behalf of Grand Duke Peter Leopold I of Lorenne) restored the former splendor of this land and therefore its agricultural productivity.

Valdichiana today

Nowadays the Val di Chiana (or Valdichiana) valley is a land full of surprises, from medieval towns to breathtaking views still reflecting their ancient spirit: an outstanding agricultural area supplying top-quality cheeses, fruits, oil and the Chianina meat.

La Casa di Brolio is located in the perfect area where you can start to explore some of Tuscany's most celebrated cities of art.

A few minutes driving you have Arezzo, where you can start the visit of the superb medieval town from Piazza Grande. The Vasari Logge, the Duomo, Saint Francis' Church with the must-see pictorial cycle painted by Piero della Francesca and the homonymous square, where the Oscar-winning masterpiece "Life is Beautiful" by Roberto Benigni was shot.

La Casa di Brolio is also a little far away from Cortona, the magnificent Etruscan town. The local celebrity is the MAEC, Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca e della Città di Cortona (Etruscan Academy and Cortona Town Museum), and you must pay a visit to the churches dedicated to St. Francis and St. Margherita, the Duomo, Palazzo Casali, the alleyways and the tiny hidden squares, often visited by famous film stars and VIP from the cultural and artistic scene. A pleasant tour of the neighborhood will lead you to Montepulciano, Pienza and Montalcino.

These locations are also popular for wine lovers throughout the world, as a matter of fact it is right here that the famous Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano are made. We can arrange guided tours and tastings to discover the most prestigious wineries.

The bucolic surroundings are famous for the monasteries and the Abbey of St. Antimo near Montalcino which according to the legend was founded by Charles The Great and represents a real Medieval holy art masterpiece.
